Somerset Hills Country Club - Preview

Course is finished, just a few minor tweaks needed. Should be made available here within a few days.

Course designed by A.W. Tillinghast in 1918 I believe. The club was founded in 1899 (wow that was a long time ago) but was later moved to the new location (over an old horse racetrack in New Jersey) where Tillinghast worked his magic. Not the longest course (about 6700 yards) but hitting the fairways is difficult due to the doglegs, odd angles and elevation changes. Turning up the wind really doubles the difficulty factor because of the extreme elevations on many of the holes. Most bunkers are shallow but the very thick and long dead rough makes up for them since it creeps very close to the fairways and greens.

Hope you all enjoy it. BJ actually has played this course in real life since he grew up close by and when play testing he remembered many of the holes and referenced how difficult the course actually played, pretty cool. This course is featured in Golf Digest top 100 US courses.

Cabo del Sol 2011...good news...

Yes, the Cabo del Sol 2011 is up now at world of golf online. I am sure glad we got this one fixed and playable. Now I can move on the Entrada of Snow Canyon: This long testy layout in southern Utah was designed by johnny Miller. It is an heroic course, comparable to The Belfry in challenge, although completely different in geographical character, demanding length as well as accuracy off the tees. Only one of the par-3's is less than 200 yards and they're a challenge to find in the frequent winds of the west. There are multiple elevation changes and the last 4 holes journey through an ancient lava bed, which adds variety as well as challenge to the golfer's long difficult trek., Thanks, Terry Armstrong

World Golf Challenge Interview

Several weeks ago we polled the community for its questions regarding the upcoming version of World Golf Challenge. We'd like to thank everyone for all the great questions that were submitted. Dean Baker, Managing Directer of Red Chain Games Ltd. was nice enough to take some time out of his busy schedule to provide several answers to your questions. When reading the following interview, please note that Dean asks for your input several times throughout.

24-HR Network: Can you give us a little insight as to why World Golf Challenge is being rebuilt from scratch with an all-new engine?
Dean Baker: We always build from scratch, there’s no point reusing old technology, it can always be improved on and if you’re not continually updating you can’t hope to be the best. Creating the best golf game is our goal and software/hardware has moved on so quickly and allows us to do so much more that we have to take advantage of the very late test developments, that requires starting over.

24-HR Network: Do you anticipate there being a community beta test for World Golf Challenge prior to its release?
Dean Baker: Yes, definitely.

24-HR Network: When do you expect for the new game to be competed and released?
Dean Baker: Progress is going better than expected but it’s still very early days, given our ambitious goals we would hope to beta next year, beyond that we can’t say yet. At the moment we’re putting all the building blocks in place, to handle textures, objects, shaders, lighting etc, we hope to start prototyping the more fun, graphical elements shortly.

24-HR Network: Can you tell us how much World Golf Challenge will cost?
Dean Baker: Our best guess is $20. Our current plan is to sell the editor and game separately, the editor will probably be $10. If you want to use the editor to make money we will require the purchase of a commercial license.

24-HR Network: What current architect features will be improved?
Dean Baker: Everything will be replaced and streamlined, taking into account everyone’s comments and to ensure maximum ease of use and therefore, speed of creation.

24-HR Network: This is kind of a broad question, but what new features might we expect in the course architect?
Dean Baker: I don’t want to reveal anything yet we are currently prototyping some ideas, that are radically different to what has gone before. Our aim is to dramatically speed up the process of building a course and hopefully at least halve the current time it takes.

24-HR Network: Will courses from previous versions of the game continue to work with the new version of the game?
Dean Baker: Because of the changes we’re not sure that will be possible, if it is we will do it.

24-HR Network: Will file sizes for the courses remain the same, or will they become bigger/smaller?
Dean Baker: It’s too early to tell. We will try keep the sizes down but as the courses become more complex, with more detail, higher resolution textures etc it’s only natural that they get bigger.

24-HR Network: Will the Game and Course Architect be released in one package, or will they be separate purchases?
Dean Baker: We’re not 100% certain but we may provide a package of both, despite releasing them individually.

24-HR Network: What version of DirectX will the game use?
Dean Baker: We’re using DX11 for development as it gives us huge advantages over previous versions. If and when 12 comes out we’ll look to support that too.

24-HR Network: Will players be able to launch the game through its own executable file, rather than having to launch the game through the portal?
Dean Baker: Hopefully yes, we’re looking at Steam as our model, which will allow a shortcut to launch the app directly.

24-HR Network: Will there be a season mode or career mode?
Dean Baker: We don’t have it designed yet but we will add them at some point.

24-HR Network: Will there be more player creation features available, regarding things like hair, skin tone, height etc?
Dean Baker: We will endeavour to allow more choice with regards to the players, while we have no plans for a character customisation tool, we will consider it in the future.

24-HR Network: Will there be more accessories added to the game, such as clubs, balls, shirts, hats etc?
Dean Baker: Yes, we hope to provide a much wider range of accessories and equipment, as well as a simpler system for importing your own.

24-HR Network: Can we look forward to things like a spectator gallery and commentary?
Dean Baker: There are currently no plans for this but if enough people want it we will reconsider.

24-HR Network: Can you tell us what kind of changes, if any, are in store for the mouse swing?
Dean Baker: We want to make some minor tweaks but nothing major.

24-HR Network: Can you tell us what kind of changes, if any, are in store for the click swing?
Dean Baker: We think this needs a more serious overhaul and we have to ensure it’s nice and smooth, regardless of frame-rate. Again, if someone could start a thread on the fansite for ideas, that would be great.

24-HR Network: Might we possibly see a "game controller" swing added to the game.
Dean Baker: We’d not considered it but I don’t see why not, please let us know what you’d prefer on the fansite, thanks.

24-HR Network: Will there be different swing animations in the game?
Dean Baker: Yes, they will all be replaced with new and improved ones.

24-HR Network: Many people love the difficulty of World Golf Challenge. Will the game maintain the current level of difficulty?
Dean Baker: We want to keep the difficulty for experienced players but improve the accessibility for newcomers. We also want to add an all new Pro mode which will be even harder!

24-HR Network: Some people say that hitting a driver off the fairway is too easy. Are there any plans to adjust this and other shots in the game?
Dean Baker: Yes, we want to make the game more accessible at first but their must a punishment for mishits at a higher level.

24-HR Network: Some people would like an option to play the game on much easier settings. Are there any plans to have clearly different difficulty levels in the game?
Dean Baker: Yes, our current goal is to introduce a handicap system to allow the player to advance to harder settings and use harder to control equipment.

24-HR Network: Can you share with us some of the things you are most excited about in the new version of World Golf Challenge?
Dean Baker: At the moment, it’s all very exciting, we’re really looking forward to prototyping the graphics and editor as they will have tangible results. We’re most looking forward to see what the new technology allows us to do in terms of short/long grass, lighting, effects, water (flow, waves, spray, waterfalls etc) and much more. Please keep an eye out for our soon be launched Dev Diary where we will update monthly on progress and provide screenshots and trailers. We hope to begin this around the end of September, depending on our progress. Thanks again for all the help and support, without you all this would not be possible.

Ask the WGC Development Team

This thread is now closed. We will be compiling the questions and forward them to Red Chain Games over the weekend. Thanks!

As some of you may have read earlier this year at 24-HR Network, Dean Baker announced that Red Chain Games is working on a whole new engine for World Golf Challenge. We thought it would be fun to allow our members to take a peek into what is in store for WGC. Dean has graciously said that he would do his best to answer our questions. But we're going to take it a step further . . . because we know that you are the ones that should be asking these questions. After all, you are the ones that are playing and designing for this great game.

That being said, this thread will be open until July 22. We ask you, the great 24-HR Network community, to submit question here for Dean and Red Chain Games about World Golf Challenge. After the question-submission time period has passed, we will bring your questions to Dean for some answers!

Before submitting your questions, please read the following ground rules:

Please keep in mind that all questions will not be able to be answered. This is due to time constraints and also because it might be too early in the development process to give an answer to a particular question.

Keep in mind that some answers may include information about intended features that may or may not be included in the final product.

We reserve the right to edit grammar and sentence structure of any question - and also to combine question regarding the same subject matter.

If we do not fully understand a question, we may send you a private message here at this site for clarification.

This thread is for QUESTIONS ONLY. If you would like to speculate about a certain question, we absolutely welcome you to create another thread in this forum.

Let the questions begin!

Torrey Pines - South Course 2011 Released

This should be a pretty accurate rendition of the South Course at Torrey. I used 3M lidar data for the base plot elevations. About 1/2 way thru the design phase I took a trip out to Cali to play a round on the real deal which was a great experience and very helpful for detailing out green slopes. The surface properties for green, fringe and fairway are custom. The greens are a bit slicker yet smoother than stock but more importantly the fringe and fairway have more realistic roll values. I also spent a fair amount of time modeling many location specific objects, including some paragliders you may notice catching currents near the cliffs above Black Beach:).
Thanks to Zona, Smokinjo', Nike, Russ, Sam, Brian S and anyone else I missed for helping play test and offering feedback over the past few months.

Course is available on the World of Golf Online website. Enjoy!

New Course - Congressional CC Blue Course (2011 US OPEN)

Congressional Country Club - Blue Course (2011 US OPEN)
Bethesda, MD

BJ and myself finished this joint project a few days ago. Hopefully everybody will enjoy it. It's a challenging course but if you can hit the fairways, you have a good chance to shoot under par. Although the rough is thick and the greens are fast, it's a fair test.

I uploaded the course already to World of Golf Online (WOGO) and it should be available shortly in the course downloads area. I also tried to upload the course here but the file size limitations here (102MB) prevented the upload. Maybe that should be increased for future reference. The zip file is 145MB. I'll attach some images. Admins here can download from WOGO or contact me directly for my mediafire link. We'd like to make this available as soon as possible so people can enjoy the course this weekend as they watch the real tournament live.

WGC Updates

World Golf Challenge 2011 has been updated.

22nd February. Try before you buy! You can download a demo of World Golf Challenge 2011 from the demos tab now.

23nd February. You can now make the golfer see-through by pressing the 'V' key. You can also re-assign this key via the "Controls" options. This will be especially useful if you are putting across a strong slope at such an angle that the hole is hidden by the golfer. (A nice little tweak for the game as suggested by Jeff Helton on the 17th February. Thanks to Dean and Rich for getting it in so quickly).
Special thanks to all the testers from last Friday night for the feedback because I did miss a few things before that, also thanks to B.J. for showing me this course and asking me if I wanted to finish it. It's a beautiful and slightly challenging course that really wasn't that hard to do, and I believe this is the first 27 hole course out there so have fun with it.

I should have Hazeltine done tonight or tomorrow but that overhead with all it's trees, shadows and shadows IN THE FAIRWAYS are causing me a slow death, I just still hope it looks Ok in the end..lol

Celtic Manor 2010 Course - Ryder Cup Edition released!

Finally and I guess better late than never. After several unsuccessful attempts to publish the course I was able to find a solution. Only the main hole shapes have blends as I believe the publishing problem was being caused by blends on the imported single spline cart paths. I really wanted to get the course released ASAP for everyone to enjoy so some concessions were made due to time limitations. There are certain regions of the course which could use additional trees (notably hole 15) but because of the publishing error I opted to keep the default imported plantings as is and the course overlay in these area untouched. That said, Jim Dickson did a great job on the original CPG1 version and this conversion plays very well. Tricky greens, deep bunkers and plenty of water will challenge you off the tee and on approach shots.

Hope you enjoy!

Celtic Manor 2010

Hate to announce that the course was not released before the Ryder Cup play as planned. While attempting to publish the course last night I got a pop up run time error and it did not finish pubbing. Last time I checked it was at 49% (12:30am) then the next time I checked (2:15am) the error message was showing. I've never had this happen before but I'm assuming it has something to do with either a poly or point count threshold because the course is a real pig in general. Unfortunately, after getting minimal sleep (figured I stay up to watch some of the Ryder Cup action til it got rain delayed) I'm now stuck at work for the next 8 hours or so. I'll try optimizing the plot and removing any unnecessary blends and then hopefully the course will publish. If it still doesn't I'll have to send it to Rich/Dean to inspect. Sorry folks.

Future Watch

As requested in another thread I'll try to give you a feel for our future plans in this thread, as and when we have any. I've been loathe to say much recently, partly because we haven't had much to say and because we're always about a year later delivering, anything we do say. That said we hope to have some news about a retail launch soon, about 3 years late admittedly and this will include a name change. The lack of a proper retail release and the loss of several publishers along the way has really hurt us, as portal sales are nowhere near sufficient, so hopefully finally getting it in stores will help. It will, for the first time ever for us, include a US release.

As of 30th September 2010 our plans are as follows: -

SHORT TO MEDIUM TERM - to continue a series of occaisional updates including edit loft angle in practice mode, Foursomes, Fourballs, concede option, Tournament creator, editor changes in the wishlist threads and more.

LONG TERM - re-do everything over from scratch to take advanatage of the latest Windows, Graphics Cards, DirectX etc to create the best looking, best playing, most fully featured golf game ever.

CPG2010 default Course/Resource folder suggestion

I understand that the reason why the game installs to the current default locations was made necessary due to a Vista security access issue originally. However, these locations are difficult to locate for many users because they are hidden by the OS as system folders I believe a simple change could be made. The core game files would still be auto-installed as they currently are but the user should be prompted with a popup during installation giving them a choice of where to install the Course and Resources folders. *Also, by default the installer should pre-fill a typical program files path (C:\Program Files for XP). At least this way if the user just clicks OK to the default path they will still be able to easily access these folders at a later date for adding downloaded courses and resources from 24hr.

In summary my suggestion is to help prevent the confusion that is often posted regarding how to install custom courses and resources. With the current system the user has to figure it out on their own, usually via a forum post about how to change the folder paths which is ultimately frustrating.

Brackenwood Hills GC for CustomPlay Golf released

My courses, (so far at least), are fictional, but I always try to make them feel and play realistically. To this end I used a real course for inspiration.

Brackenwood Hills GC, (Par 72), is a fictional course based on the layout/routing of a Municipal golf course near my home called simply Brackenwood. I laid the basic plot out using an aerial image but knew from the start that the course length would play too easy in this game, so my goal was to toughen it up a bit mainly by lengthening the holes a bit and some minor re-routing to accomodate what I wanted to do with the course. The other thing I wanted on this course was some elevation as not too many 'elevated' courses have been done for this game. After generally optimising the landplot how I wanted it I selected the 3 main areas that would suit my needs and put in the hills that give this course it's name. The one other thing I tried to do with this layout was to put the course onto the plot with as little 'tweaking' as possible so there are no multi level, or tricked up greens

The real Brackenwood is a beautiful course but as with many Municipals it's bunkers are unremarkable and few so I have used the same basic technique on all the bunkers on the course so they all have a similar look and feel regardless of the shape I have used and have also not used that many bunkers per hole. I have used minimal planting of trees so that where possible you can see several tees, fairways and holes as you look across the course especially from some elevated viewpoints.

The custom duck sounds I found on the internet. The custom flag I somehow managed to make myself!

Thanks go to Steve Richardson for his ducks, John Drolet for his cars, BJ for the boats, Dean and Rich for taking the time to fix the bug that caused this course to have no shadows on it, Dave Farmer for the Course Overlay and to Jim Dickson for a little inspiration. (It means a lot to me when a 'noted' designer, someone I look up to, takes the time to tell me he likes the look of my course and the way it plays). Also thanks to anyone who has commented on my course based on the screenshots and videos I have posted on the site.

I hope you enjoy playing it as much as I had fun designing it.

CustomPortal Downloading - IMPORTANT

Hi All,

For any users who are having problems with the Game/Course/Resources download speeds in CustomPortal try this.

Open the CustomPortal.

Go to the "Store" tab.

Click the "Buy Now - $30" button.

Let the next page load fully. (Don't worry. You are not actually buying anything at this point).

When it has loaded go to the Game or Courses tab and try and download the Game /Course or Resources you want and you should see a massive improvement in the download speed.

Example: My speed went up from 15kb to 245kb which is not the best but is about 1533% speed increase if my maths is correct.

I hope this helps.
Thanks for the update info Dean. I'm sure the new sensativity on putting will be fantastic and hopefully the new putting aiming is a simple surface arrow. I still would love to have that surface arrow on all shots and just get rid of the aiming pole altogether. Pefect example: RAT and I were playing Majilis (or something like that) and the 18th hole is a severe dog leg left. With that aiming pole, you can tell exactly where your ball is going to land and just how much to cut off. If all you had was the arrow, it would be a much tougher judgement on just how much to cut off on the dog leg. You would know the direction you are hitting but you would not have that darn pole out there saying "this is where your ball is going to land". My vote is to either remove that pole or make it an option your can turn on or off.

What would you do with the arrow if you're right up agianst a steep bunker face or against an object etc?

One of the bug fixes on the latest update fixes the player alignment with the pin on mini courses. Why not the full sized courses also? The player is never directly aiming at the pin.

If a CPU player takes 10 or more shots on a hole, he now forfeits the hole.
BUG FIX: Fixed the camera used after the ball is in the cup (previously the camera would often be placed inside the character).
Offer Easy/Medium/Hard pin difficulty for mini golf courses.
BUG FIX: Shadows not being rendered on Brackenwood golf course.
Flag now animates even when semi-transparent (i.e. when reach green).

Upcoming Courses

Hi guys -

I don't know if the old 24 hour gaming site is up anymore (I lost my link to it), but there was a thread on there where someone (BJ?) listed a bunch of courses in various stages of development. I thought it might be good to paste that list over to the new site for anyone interested in what's on the horizon. If there are any ETAs for completion (even if just guesstimates), that would be great to know too. Almost more than playing, I simply enjoy seeing the new courses that people put so much work into. Some of them really are a showcase for the software and are beautiful to look at. The Coeur D'Alene is a great recent example...really a great-looking rendition!

Anyway, if anyone has the list of in-progress or planned courses, please post it here. Of course other designers can be working on other courses independently, but the list being worked on by some of you "core" guys was nice to see.
You launch Portal and it keeps saying unable to connect to server and then after 5 or 6 tries later it finally connects. And this is now happening almost every time I launch Portal. Then once you connect and try to join a game online, half the time it tells you that you can't connect to the host or that the server is full. Once again, after 5 or 6 tries and 10 minutes later, it will finally let you join. I don't understand why this is happening and it sure is more then frustrating.

The Belfry is an exceptional rendition by Jim Dickson that was originally created in CPG1 and then updated for CPG2010. The course is revered for hosting 4 memorable Ryder Cups and it is an ideal choice for online match play. There are a lot of great holes such as the drivable par 4 10th and difficult 18th with approach over water to a heavily guarded green with multiple tiers.

CDA is a course that I started back during CPG1 days and have updated in stages for each new version of the game. The final 2010 version features the animated "putter boat" on the famous island green 14th hole, custom trees and a bunch of superb custom objects created by my good friend Steve Richardson. During testing we found the course setups really well for Modified Stableford format thanks to the many high risk/reward holes.
Hope you guys enjoy both of these courses!
Kingsbarns - a links style course just a hop skip and a jump from St. Andrews along the coast line. Make sure you turn up the wind a bit. Not that many trees and the course defense relies on those strong gusts. Actually, the course is layed out in a similar fashion to St. Andrews, with most of the holes lining up in a single direction, and then back the opposite way. A strong sidewind coming off the ocean can make this course a real pain. A great golf challenge.
Estonia - not an overly challenging course but there are some really nice holes here. The course doesn't have alot of length but there are a few holes that are very long. Also a few very tricky tiered greens can jump out at you.

Terry Armstrong has released a new version of Muirfiled Village for the Community to enjoy. As he has stated that it fixes issues with the previously released version of the course I have removed the previous version to replace it with this one and suggest members do the same with their golf course collection!.
